Techspace Aero delivers the first modules of the GP7000 engine for Pratt & Whitney’s Airbus A380’s
December 17th 2003
Techspace Aero presented GP7000 program managers with the first low pressure compressor and front bearing compartment for the first test engine that will be fired up on the testing bench in the first quarter of 2004.
This event is the first milestone of the development phase executed on a tight schedule of 18 months, and the beginning of the certification phase that will continue until 2005.
Techspace Aero teams have implemented highly innovative concepts in order to meet programme needs in terms of engine weight and cost. The challenge was also to manufacture hi-tech parts of a larger size than those usually made at Techspace Aero.
In March 2002, Techspace Aero signed a partnership agreement with the American engine manufacturers Pratt & Whitney, whereby the company was to be responsible for developing and making the low pressure compressors and low pressure turbine discs, together making up 7.5% of the whole engine.
Over three hundred GP7000 engines, developed by the Engine Alliance (General Electric and Pratt & Whitney), have already been ordered for Airbus A380s that will be flying in 2006. Techspace Aero will also be participating in the testing of the future engine thanks to contracts cinched by its Business Unit —specialised in testing bay engineering—, to supply testing equipment.
