An F16 touches down at Techspace Aero
Herstal, March 21st 2007
Over the last few days, technical teams from Comopsair (Airborne section of Belgian Defence) have been working away at Techspace Aero in order to put an F16 fighter plane in place. This move is an illustration of the close ties between the company in Herstal and the Belgian Defence, in particular, it’s Airborne division.
Techspace Aero had, in fact, approached the minister of Defence, André Flahaut, asking if they could have one of the aircraft which were part of the 116 planes ordered by Belgium in 1976, and which are slowly being withdrawn from service. The fighter to be shown at Techspace Aero was prepared at the Rocourt Arsenal before being transported by special convoy to the company’s gates.
Thirty years after setting up in the Hauts-Sarts industrial zone, Techspace Aero has been entrusted with the plane for which it made and assembled almost 600 engines (Pratt & Whitney engine F100), not to mention the maintenance carried out on over 5000 engine modules to this day. All this was achieved due to business built up with 14 air forces around the world.
In 2004 a Fouga Magister was placed on the Milmort roundabout, in collaboration with Herstal’s local authorities and the Belgian defence. Now, this other magnificent aircraft, witness to the know-how of an entire generation of workers, has been put at Techspace Aero’s disposal.
The F16 was designed by General Dynamics (bought by Lockheed Martin in 1993). Its origins can be found in the YF-16, a prototype light fighter plane ordered by the US air force in 1972. After the F16’s very first flight in 1974, the first flight of a series model, the F16A took place on August 7th 1978. It was powered by a Pratt & Whitney turbo-reactor F100-PW-200 with a thrust of 6.2 tonnes in seconds and 10.7 with post-combustion.
Partner to the worlds biggest engine manufactures, Techspace Aero designs, assembles and supplies modules, equipment, services test benches for aeronautical and space engines. Thanks to its high-tech products Techspace Aero contributes to the success of hundreds of Airbus (A320, A330, A340 et A380), Boeing (B737, B747, B767, B777, B787), Embraer (190) and many other flights.
A SAFRAN group company (51% of capital), Techspace Aero achieved turnover of 358 million euros in 2006 with a 1350 strong workforce.
