Techspace Aero participates in the development of new technologies to reduce polluting emissions from aero engines.
Herstal, October 15, 2004
Techspace Aero is participating in the “Antle” and “Atos” Technological Research Projects led by Rolls-Royce and financed, in part, by the European Commission and the Walloon Region.
It’s a question of two research programs led by various European engine manufacturers to validate a range of innovative technologies designed to reduce polluting emissions from future generation engines. The aim is to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) by 12% and nitrogen oxides (NOx) by 60%, by lightening engines, on the one hand, and by improving their performance, on the other.
In the context of these programs, Techspace Aero has taken responsibility for the following elements, linked to strategic areas of the company’s program:
the design and manufacture of oil pumps for engine lubrication systems: the development of a completely new concept of electric drive (rather than mechanical) enabling delivery of the exact quantity of oil and a reduction in weight.
the carbon lift seals for the front support bearing (dynamic seals on a cushion of air), enabling air bleed and oil consumption to be limited while ensuring a perfect seal.
the specification and manufacture of a stage of the low pressure turbine, comprising 4 stages instead of 5, so reducing its weight, while at the same time improving its performance, therefore its consumption, by means of a new aerodynamic profile for the blades.
At the end of this major research undertaking, which has taken almost five years, Techspace Aero has just delivered prototypes which are soon to be incorporated into a demonstration engine in order to carry out the testing necessary for validation of the concepts involved.
“If we are able to carry out this sort of research project, above all it’s thanks to help from the Government authorities”, explains Philippe Schleicher, Techspace Aero Managing Director. “Participation in the Antle and Atos programs is a wonderful opportunity for Techspace Aero to expand its portfolio of technological expertise and to play an active role in improving the environment.”
These activities come within the Snecma Group R&T strategy, in which the improvement of environmental impact (reduction in noise levels and pollution emissions) is a priority. In order to rise to the technological challenges presented by the environment, companies in the Snecma Group carry out a major part of their research efforts within the framework of multi-partnerships of European companies.
